I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. 1Jo 2:14b
The first verse to young men simply states that John writes because they have overcome the wicked one. This verse states 3 reasons: strength, the abiding Word of God, and the defeat of the wicked one. It is clearer what is required to overcome battles in this verse.
Strength can be sapped in many ways:
- Contention with spouse or other family members.
- Getting priorities out of balance.
- Guilt (there are so many reasons for this I can’t list them all.)
The abiding Word of God must be maintained throught:
- Reading the Word.
- Fellowship with believers.
- Meditation on the Word
Children need to see the vulnerability of “childhood” from a father that relies on his Heavenly Father. But they also need to witness the strength of a man that applies God’s Word and stands firm in the times of battle with decisiveness and a will to win.
