…because ye have known him that is from the beginning. 1 John 2:14
A mature relationship with the Father: complete confidence in the One who never fails. This allows you earthly fathers to nurture, lead, and release children who are confident in the Father and in fatherhood. Confidence comes from knowing… have you known your Father? Have your children known you?
There is no reason to hold back. Children need to know your joy in them, your hopes and dreams for them, your concern for them, and your willingness to sacrifice for them.
When you have an intimate knowledge of the Lord, you should have no problem trying to build an intimate relationship with your children. This is the transformational aspect of fatherhood: not that your children love you, but that you love them. Not that they know you, but that you know them. Not that they give anything to you, but that you give everything you can to them.
There are so many obstacles to being open and vulnerable to your children. Don’t be concerned that they will mess up if they know you have. Don’t worry that they will think less of you if you have a past. The worst thing for a child is to not know who loves them and cares for them. An imperfect father is much better for a child than no father at all.
Allow your Perfect Father to swallow up all of your imperfections and insecurities. Know His grace. Feel His presence and power. Allow him to test you and prove Himself to you. Become a picture of the peace of God to your children by letting them know you, as you know HIM.
