Since we recognize as Christians that we are still striving for perfection through daily submission to the Spirit, we must confess to the world our solidarity with their moral plight.
John C. Carroll

This statement from Are You A Christian? Redefining Apostolic immediately stood out to me. Some people may think that the way to get close to unbelievers is to try to be like them. But the Christian claim is to follow Christ. Expressing the sentiment from this quote bridges the gap between where we are as humans and what we are trying to be as Christians.

Bro. Carroll gives a 3 point guide to following Christ that I would like to share in general here:

  • Forsake self.
  • Follow Christ.
  • Finish the course.
  • As a Christian, I can identify with these three points and the struggle of the decision that each one represents. How does that translate to those outside of Christ who have an idealized view of what the Christian claim is?

Christians are not perfect, which is the misunderstanding many have about the Christian self-concept. But Christians are in a state of being perfected by the Spirit of Christ. Bro. Carroll unpacks all of this in a critique of “perfectionism”. He explains the concepts of justification and sanctification in his typical scholarly manner with biblical integrity. This clarification of the Christian claim should be a comfort to Christians and a clear apologetic to the world outside of Christianity.

If you know John C. Carroll like many across the nation do from his preaching, teaching, and debate ministry, you will not be disappointed with the book. If you are not familiar with Bro. Carroll, you will see the study, thoughtfulness, and heart that goes into his ministry. And I hope it blesses you.
